Recently, another Cuban superstar defected from his home country. That man is 23-year-old outfielder Yasmani Tomas. The Cuban joins the likes of Yasiel Puig, Yoenis Cespades and Jose Abreu as big bat defectors. The corner outfielder is said to have a big upside and loads of power potential.

Tomas collected six hits in 16 at-bats during the 2013 World Baseball Classic with a pair of homers, a double while fanning four times. This year in the Cuban National Series, Tomas hit .290 with six homers in 257 at-bats despite playing through an arm injury. On the 20-80 scale, Tomas has a 70 for power according to scouts.
Of course, a number of teams take interest in Tomas’ services, but he can only sign with one team. The Red Sox definitely have to be interested in signing Tomas as he would be a perfect fit for the team. He will not come cheap, but so is every talented outfield free agent. A $50 million contract should be enough to lure him in, an amount which Boston is in position to pay him.

The only Red Sox players past 2015 with a guaranteed contract are Clay Buchholz and Dustin Pedroia. With this in mind, Tomas would be a nice piece to build the team around. He adds a bat to the lineup and could potentially be the Red Sox next DH once David Ortiz is gone.
Overall, Yasmani Tomas would be a nice addition to the Boston Red Sox. They have a loaded farm system which lacks power but In that instance, Tomas is the solution. Power prospects are by far the most difficult types of players to develop, so when Boston sees one who is so polished and so close to the big leagues, they need to pounce on the opportunity and get a potential superstar who could contribute to their team for a long time.
