Fenway Feature #4: A triangle in the diamond?

Fenway Park is one unique baseball diamond, if you haven’t figured that out by now. One other item that makes this ball field different than other parks is “The Triangle”.

Now you may be wondering “How is there a triangle in the field?” Well, that’s a good question. I’ll apologize to you in advance, because it’s really not anything all that awesome or crazy.

In center field at Fenway Park, the walls are formed into a triangle shape. It’s to the left of the bullpen, if you’re looking at it from home plate, and 420 feet from the plate. It’s the deepest part of the field.

The triangle is a pretty dangerous area- many a center fielder has kept their eye on the ball for too long and found themselves running right into that center field wall or the fence on the bullpen. It’s also a tricky little area, as it’s so far back that it can easily give batters a triple. It’s common to see a loose ball bounce around back there, getting away from the fielder.

So now you know what the Fenway Park Triangle is all about. It’s really nothing all that special, but it’s important to know the ins and outs of your favorite ballpark.
