Jonathan Herrera outrighted, Carlos Rivero claimed

herreraRecently, in order to clear some spots off of the 40-man roster, the Boston Red Sox made some low-key roster moves ridding themselves of a pair of utility infielders.

The bigger move included out righting utility man Jonathan Herrera off of the 40-man roster. He refused Minor League assignment and became a free agent in hopes of cracking a big league roster next season.

Acquired in exchange for Franklin Morales and Chris Martin from the Colorado Rockies, the Boston Red Sox hoped that Herrera would be an effective utility infielder for the team, and he was just that — for a while.

Herrera, who recently turned 30 years old, cracked the Boston Red Sox Opening Day roster this past season but was designated for assignment about halfway through the year in favor of utility man Brock Holt. In addition to playing all around the horn, he hit .233 with a .307 OBP in 42 games and went nine for 36 versus left-handed pitching.

The other move sent Carlos Rivero to the Seattle Mariners. He was claimed off waivers, a move in which the Red Sox did not yield any return.

Rivero, 26, is what some may consider to be a journeyman as he just made his big league debut this past season playing in four games for the Boston Red Sox after splitting time in AA Portland and AAA Pawtucket earlier in the year.

In a small sample size Rivero played well collecting four hits in seven big league at-bats while crushing a home run and drawing a walk. It may not have been much, but it was sufficient to spark the Mariners’ interest enough to acquire him.

After both of these moves were finalized the 40-man roster stands at 36 men. Simple math indicates that the team has four spots available on the 40-man roster—spots that will likely now be used to protect some younger guys from being selected in the Rule V draft.
