Well, things have really started to go downhill for Jonathan Herrera. At the beginning of this year he won the utility infield job and struggled at the plate. By the time he found his groove at the plate, Boston was low on active roster spots and he was optioned to AAA Pawtucket. After 13 games in Pawtucket, he suffered an elbow injury, landing himself on the disabled-list. Now he is undergoing surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow, killing any chances he had of being a September call-up.

Herrera hopes to be ready in time for winter ball as the Venezuelan native plays in the Venezuelan Winter League and the Caribbean World Series annually.
This year in Boston, Herrera owned a .233/.307/.289 slash over the course of 42 games totaling 90 at-bats which is not overly impressive, but satisfactory for a utility infielder. In the field, he played first, second and third base as well as shortstop committing one error the whole year which came at third base. Primarily, he played shortstop for Boston this year and did not boot a ball in 120 innings of defensive work.

Even though he will be good to go next year, the chances of Boston bringing him back are unlikely. Sure he is a viable option as a utility infielder, and maybe even a good one too, but the way Brock Holt has played this year certainly belittles Jonathan Herrera in the Red Sox organization. Playing every position except for the batteries, Holt is slashing .300/.351/.408 in 89 games. While Holt is fielding just .939 at third base, he is playing great defensively in the outfield and is still a viable option anywhere on the field.
Right now, Jonathan Herrera’s career with the Boston Red Sox organization is uncertain. Herrera, who was acquired in exchange for Franklin Morales and Chris Martin last off-season, is a non-tender candidate and Boston may need the 40-man roster spot more than they need Herrera. If they do in fact non-tender him, making him a free agent, there will be plenty of suitors for his services.
