Yesterday’s 3-3 draw with the Orioles marked the debut to the lineup for Sox prospect Bryce Brentz. The young outfielder had been a spectator for the first half of spring training due to a mishap in which he shot himself in the leg while cleaning a loaded gun. Fortunately Brentz wasn’t seriously hurt, considering the situation, and he is fully recovered. He punctuated his arrival at Red Sox camp with a solo home run in the fifth inning of yesterday’s game.
If the bullet that went through his leg wasn’t painful enough, Brentz has had to deal with being the punch line of many jokes since the incident. His dinger on Friday is the first step in erasing the memory of this act and replacing it with memories of on the field glory. I’d be remiss to not at least say farewell to this young prospect’s most embarrassing moment with a few punch lines of my own, just to get them out of my system.
1. Wow, look at that home run by Bryce Brentz… What a shot!
2. Did you see how hard that ball was hit, it was a bullet!
3. Hey Bryce, break a leg!
4. Defense always improves when your outfielder has a gun.
5. Brentz saw the pitch, it was a sinker that just didn’t sink… and he pulled the trigger!
