Taking a look at the Salem Red Sox versus Carolina Mudcats box score, there were a lot more zeroes than usual, because the Red Sox high-A affiliate started off the season with a bang.

salem red soxWinning 2-0 in a rain-shortened contest, it was the pitching that shined for the Red Sox, although they only recorded 19 outs. The game was called in the seventh as a result of rain, but the numbers speak for themselves.

2010 MLB tenth round draft pick Jacob Dahlstrand took the hill for Salem today and he could not have been much better. Giving his team six strong innings, he held the Mudcats hitless while walking a pair and striking out four.

Although Dahlstrand did not come back out to pitch the seventh, the weather would not have permitted him to do much past then anyway. Joe Gunkel took the hill, presumably to finish the last three innings of the game, but after he recorded the first out of the seventh inning, the game went to a rain delay.

During the delay, the no-hitter must have been on the team’s mind, which can sometimes goof a good thing like that up, but as boxers are saved by the bell at times, this game could have potentially been saved by weather.

The no-hitter marks the first one for Salem since July 17th, 2013 and to make matters better, this was only Salem’s first game of the year. Momentum is definitely on their side headed on out now because there could not be a better way for a club to start the season.

At the plate, the Red Sox did not do much, but in the second inning second baseman Wendell Rijo went deep to give his team a 2-0 lead and that was essentially all she wrote.

Top outfield prospect Manuel Margot went 3-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases, although he was not even close to being the biggest factor in the win despite the impressive performance.
