The Red Sox got an early start on the trade deadline today when they shipped under-performing starter Jake Peavy to the San Francisco Giants for a pair of pitching prospects. He will start tomorrow night for the Giants on ESPN when they take on the Los Angeles Dodgers. There is no word yet if Peavy is flying out west, or will be driving out in the Duck Boat he purchased last year.
Peavy (1-9, 4.72 ERA) hasn’t had much run support this season, receiving two runs or fewer in each of his past eight starts. He’s also 0 for June and July, with his last win coming on May 29th. It will be his third team in less than a year, as he came to Boston from the Chicago White Sox on July 30th of 2013.
So who did the Giants ship up to Boston? Heath Hembree, a right-handed pitcher who has 9 innings of MLB experience, and Edwin Escobar, a lefty pitcher with a 25-40 career record. Not exactly the numbers you want to see if you’re starting to think about who might fill the void left by Jon Lester, who could be the next one getting a one way ticket out of Logan.
