Robby Scott Looking Impressive So Far for Sea Dogs

Robby Scott continued his hot start to the season against the Trenton Thunder on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field; tossing two innings of relief and allowing just a single unearned on one hit, while striking out two.

Scott has not allowed a run in four of his five appearances this season, including four shutout innings against the New Britain Rock Cats last Tuesday, only the second start of his professional career.Robby Scott Portland Sea Dogs

So far this season Scott is 0-0, with a 2.70 ERA and nine strikeouts in 10 innings.

The 25-year old Miami, FL native is coming off a strong 2014 campaign in which he owned a 8-2 record to go with a 1.96 ERA and 51 strikeouts.

Those numbers were good for a trip to the 2014 Mid-Season All-Star Game for the Eastern League. Scott was also voted to the Arizona Fall League’s Rising Star team in October.

“Between being in the All-Star game last year in the Eastern League and then having the opportunity to play in the All-Star game in the Fall League was awesome, two opportunities, two accolades that I will remember when my playing career is over,” Scott told Yawkey Way Report.

“It’s one of those things where you get to reward yourself for something for your efforts, for the work you put in throughout your time. It’s not the last time I want to be on an All-Star team, and hopefully can be on an All-Star team at [every] level.”

Despite a shortened off-season because of the Arizona Fall League, Scott felt no ill effects during Spring Training this year.

“I [actually] felt better, just because I didn’t have that extended period of time off. My arm felt a lot better getting ready to go for Spring Training because I didn’t have that extra month and a half off, so I felt actually a lot better the first time I started throwing,” Scott said.

Robby Scott also realizes that with his recent string of success, his promotion could be just a phone call away.

“That’s what it’s all about, seeing guys have that opportunity. You got to be able to put yourself in the best possible position to succeed and be ready for that opportunity when your name is called, and hopefully that opportunity comes,” he said.

“A year ago now Mookie Betts was in this locker room. Now seeing him doing what he’s been doing [for the Red Sox] it’s been awesome. It’s exciting for us and exciting for the entire organization.”

Upper Minors to Use Pitch Clock In 2015

The game of baseball is losing popularity with younger generations for one simple    reason—the games are so long. A lot of young people these days lack patience, so Major League Baseball is working on something to speed up the process of games.

After successfully cutting down the length of games by using a pitch clock in the Arizona Fall League this past fall, MLB commissioner Bud Selig decided to give it a try in the upper Minors this upcoming season (AA and AAA). It will likely be the last thing he does as he is leaving office on January 25th when Rob Manfred will be coming in from relief to replace him.

pitch clockIn the Arizona Fall League, there was a 12 second time limit between pitches no one on base, but the limit was increased to 20 seconds with runners on. If the pitcher did not throw the ball in the allotted time, it was called a ball.

Arizona Diamondbacks top prospect who started his team’s first game in the Fall League went about everything normally, but said, “Then I look at the clock and it’s already at 14 seconds,” Bradley said of the time remaining before the next pitch. “I’m like, oh jeez!”

Combined with time limits between innings and a rule that did not allow batters to step out of the box, the Arizona Fall League was able to shave 10 minutes off each game it was used.

From a Minor League reporter’s perspective, this is great news. It will certainly be a nice change in pace given how long some games can drag on for what seems like an eternity– especially if there is a rain delay.

Right now, Major League Baseball has a 12 second pitch rule (Rule 8.04) but it is never enforced because there is not a visible pitch clock. If this experiment goes over well in the Minors, perhaps it makes it’s way to the big leagues in 2016.

Deven Marrero Shaping Up As Excellent Trade Bait

Deven MarreroIt is clear the Boston Red Sox will need to make some moves this off season to shape up a respectable ball club. With the depth they possess in the outfield, which is complemented by a deep farm system, they have pieces to move.

Taking a look at Red Sox prospects who are playing well in the Arizona Fall League, none have put up a stronger performance than shortstop Deven Marrero. Marrero, 24, was a first round draft pick back in the 2012 MLB draft and although his glove has progressed nicely for the most part, his bat still has potential but lags behind a bit.

After hitting .210/.260/.285 for the Paw Sox in 50 games this past season, Marrero has really turned things around while playing for the Surprise Saguros. He is 10-for-31 and has drawn nine walks in 10 games while smacking eight hits in 19 at-bats off of right-handed pitching.

As he is hitting well in such tough competition, boasts an excellent glove on defense and a younger shortstop in Xander Bogaerts on the depth chart, Marrero certainly makes excellent trade bait for the Boston Red Sox if they wish to deal him.

Owning a career .690 OPS in 286 regular season Minor League games, the Red Sox may have their doubts of whether or not Marrero’s bat will be able to last in the big leagues. To put it this way, Jackie Bradley Jr. who owns a career .531 OPS in 127 big league games has a career .850 OPS in 232 games down on the farm.

According to Soxprospects.com, Marrero ranks 12th on the Red Sox list of top prospects in a farm system loaded with depth meaning he may be a top prospect for another team. With this in mind, the trade value is definitely there.

Perhaps Marrero is bundled up in a deal for a starting pitcher or perhaps he is dealt straight up for Stephen Vogt (one can hope). Either way, he has trade value and could allow the Red Sox to make a big deal this off-season.

Odds are he will not be the Derek Jeter of the Red Sox that he hopes to be, but he will definitely help the team regardless of whether or not they deal him elsewhere.
