Jackie Bradley Jr. Hitting Well in Pawtucket

Jackie Bradley Jr.

Although it is only seven games into the season, something seems a little bit different about PawSox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. this season— he is hitting well.

Starting off this season in the Minors for the first time since 2012, the outfielder is swinging a hot bat, regardless of the sample size. To date, he has 35 at-bats on the year and has collected 13 hits (.371 average) with four doubles and a jackie bradley jr.walk. He leads the team in total bases with 17.

Sure, this is based off of a small sampling, but any signs of life from Bradley at the plate could pay off in a huge manner for the Red Sox this season. Defensively, he probably should have won the Gold Glove last year, but at the plate he had quite the slump in the summer months.

With Rusney Castillo day to day, the right-handed Bradley—who hits lefty—could find himself with a huge advantage granted that the only thing Castillo has yet to do is play on an every day basis. If Bradley is able to keep stringing hits together like his early scouting reports indicated, he could leave the Boston Red Sox with some tough decisions to make.

The Red Sox will need to see more than eight games from Bradley before they call him up given that he is a lifetime .196 hitter in 164 big league games. If he continues to do what he is doing, or close to it for a month or so, and Castillo cannot keep up, then Bradley might just force his way up to Boston.

Of course injuries could help Bradley’s case as a call-up as well, but it seems unlikely that they will call him up to do anything less than play on an everyday basis. After all, he still has a few more days before he turns 25.

Reviewing 2014 Red Sox Rookie Position Players

After an abysmal 2014 season, the Boston Red Sox look to turn things around in 2015. Five rookie position players saw a good chunk of playing time last year for Boston, which is why it is worth taking a look to see why underdogs can thrive as well.

The two big time prospects headed into the season were Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr., neither of whom produced nearly was well as expected. While Bogaerts hit well at times and played adequate defense at shortstop, his bat went missing in action during the summer months as he hit just .157 in 248 at-bats from June through August.

Jackie Bradley Jr. on the other hand, was excellent defensively but failed to pull his weight at red sox rookiethe plate, posting the lowest OPS among all qualifying outfielders in Major League Baseball. Defensively though, he was another story—but Boston still went ahead and signed Cuban defector Rusney Castillo to fill the void in center field.

Younger players who the Red Sox were not expecting as much from ended up being the ones who gave them more production.

Very few people would have thought Christian Vazquez would be the Red Sox starting catcher headed into the 2015 season, but that is the case. He hit .254 with a .312 OBP off of righties last season while gunning down 52% of the runners who tried to steal off of him in 54 games—not bad for a rookie catcher.

Drilling his way into the lineup by playing every single position except for the batteries, Brock Holt etched his way into the big league picture by doing everything that was asked of him and then some. Although he hit .281 with four homers and 12 stolen bases in 106 games last year, he would not be coming into the 2015 season projected to be the utility man if it weren’t for his versatility.

Who could forget about Mookie Betts? Switching from second base to the outfield, the top prospect was originally not expected to make his big league debut until 2015, but his consistent bat earned him playing time for Boston. Showing off power, speed and plate discipline, he has the right stuff which is why he is projected to post the highest WAR on the team this year.

Don’t Forget About Quintin Berry

As Spring Training approaches, the Boston Red Sox already appear to have a major problem—way too many outfielders and a suspect, at best, starting rotation. Questions lurk around the five guys who will be starting on a regular basis in Boston. Where is the ace? How long before they tank? Why did they pay Justin Masterson $9.5 million? What about the outfield?

The Red Sox have a plethora of outfielders—too many in fact. It is clear that one outfielder in particular (likely Allen Craig) will have to be dealt as the team condenses down to 25 men in April for Opening Day, but it is unclear what Boston will receive in return as they seem to have their heart set on going into the year with a hand-picked rotation.

Even when an outfielder is dealt, the team will still have plenty of depth at the position. Not only will they have three guys on the bench who can play all three positions (including Brock Holt), but they will also have talent down in Pawtucket.

quintin berryThe three starting outfielders projected for the Paw Sox this season are Jackie Bradley Jr., Bryce Brentz and Quintin Berry. While Bradley is an excellent defender, Brentz is a powerful hitter who clobbers lefties and Berry is a serious stolen base threat; the team’s three viable call-up options and Boston will have choices depending on the scenario.

Back in 2013, Berry, who is a perfect 25-for-25 in MLB stolen base attempts from 2012-2014, helped the Boston Red Sox win a World Series as a pinch runner on the post-season roster. Despite only being used once the rosters expanded, he found his way onto the playoff roster as the team no longer needed to carry five starting pitchers.

Currently, Berry is not on the 40-man roster and has no options remaining. If the team does in fact turn to his services—they will need to do so wisely. If they need to call him up and send him back down, they are out of luck and he will be exposed to the waiver wire where someone will surely bite.

September will roll around eventually and if Boston finds themselves in a similar situation as they were in back in 2013, do not be surprised to see his number called once again—whatever it may be.
