Rubby De La Rosa Poised For Strong 2015 Campaign

rubby de la rosaHigh on young pitching talent and low on spots, the Boston Red Sox have the framework for a solid rotation next season. Of course, they will likely add a big name to help their young talent, but there is still plenty of talent nonetheless. Among this talent is 25-year-old flamethrower Rubby De La Rosa who is in position for a breakout season.

2014 has been a productive year for Rubby De La Rosa who is proving himself as one of the most reliable pitchers on the team. Posting a 4.01 ERA in 16 starts totaling 92 innings, he has struck out 64 men while walking 33 giving him the lowest ERA on the starting staff. Joe Kelly trails him shortly with a 4.13 ERA. As time goes on, De La Rosa who will be 26 next year will only get better.

In his last outing on Sunday, De La Rosa tossed four innings surrendering three runs on seven hits while all the runs came off of one swing — a Jose Bautista home run. In addition, he fanned and walked a pair of batters. Other than one pitch, De La Rosa put together an impressive outing.

As for his goals for next season, De La Rosa keeps it simple and does not mince words.

“Health and championship,” he said in an interview via Twitter when talking about his goals.

This year also marks the first year De La Rosa has been fully healed from his Tommy John surgery he underwent in 2011. He sat out the majority of 2012 tossing just a few relief outings and in 2013, he was on an innings limit and ended up tossing just 91.2 innings because of it. 2014 marks the highest workload ever for Rubby De La Rosa as he has now tossed 152 innings between Boston and AAA Pawtucket. In 2015, that number will be pushed even further as De La Rosa will be tested as a full-time member of the Red Sox rotation.

As for a championship, that is a great goal. Boston may be in position to bring home another title next season with all the young talent that is emerging, along with the veterans who are already there and may be brought in. Of course, the 2015 roster could use another front-line pitcher, but other than that it looks to be shaping up well.

Brandon Workman Sees Himself As A Starter

Brandon WorkmanAfter arguably the worst performance of his career, Brandon Workman was sent down to AAA Pawtucket. Allowing seven earned in the fourth inning of a game against the Seattle Mariners, the Red Sox sent him down so he could work on his consistency. On Wednesday however, he was recalled from AAA Pawtucket by the big league club so he could make a start Thursday.

A member of the 2013 World Series team, Brandon Workman shined in relief throughout the playoffs last year. Over the course of seven outings in relief, the tall righty hurled 8.2 scoreless innings while fanning four and walking three.

He shined in relief over a small sample size this year posting a 2.84 on for outings totaling 6.1 innings, but it is not his preferred role.

“Well, I like starting. I like having a routine between outings and knowing when I’m going to pitch, being able to do my work between outings and having set dates — I like that better”.

Even though he has been inconsistent at the big league level as a starter, he at least understands why.

“It’s more about rotation and stuff. When I’ve done well I’ve been able to locate my pitches and keep them down in the zone. When I’ve struggled, it’s been because I’ve been up in the zone and you know at the big league level you have to be able to throw where you want to”.

Brandon Workman owns a 5.13 ERA in 12 starts for the Red Sox this year, but still has a shot to crack the rotation next year — even if it is not a lock. Red Sox manager John Farrell brought up the possibility of using a six man rotation in September. Since he is getting the start Thursday, it appears as though he is the sixth man.

For the Paw Sox, his last outing was a step in the right direction. Going 6.2 strong innings, Workman allowed one run on three hits while walking two and striking out six last Friday. He improved to 7-1 on the year which is almost the polar opposite of his 1-8 big league record this year. Truthfully, wins are an overrated stat and he should have a better record for the Red Sox based off of some of the outings he has thrown.

Despite the demotion, Brandon Workman kept the most important thing — his confidence. Workman still seems certain he will crack the big league rotation next season.

“I do. You know, I’ve had some high points and some low points this season— throwing the ball really well at times and struggling at other times. I had a good outing here the other day, I feel like I commanded my pitches really well and I’m excited at the opportunity presented to get back up there and be able to perform”.
