The World Baseball Classic Starts This Weekend

The World Baseball Classic starts this weekend and I know that you are all excited to watch Japan play Brazil in Japan at 5 A.M local time. I know I will have my alarm clock set early to watch that action while eating pancakes and Sake.  I understand that the World Baseball Classic was started because baseball was tossed out of the Olympics faster than El Guapo could toss down two tacos and a cerveza during the post game meal. I understand that to people outside of America, the World Baseball Classic is a big deal. But sadly to those who live under Old Glory, we could care less. (Shh…No one tell the MLB Network)

I myself cannot get excited about the United States team, here is a look at the roster:

P R.A. Dickey (Toronto Blue Jays)
P Jeremy Affeldt (San Francisco Giants)
P Ryan Vogelsong (San Francisco Giants)
 P Craig Kimbrel (Atlanta Braves)
P Luke Gregerson (San Diego Padres)
 P Chris Perez (Cleveland Indians)
 P Vinnie Pestano (Cleveland Indians)
P Tim Collins (Kansas City Royals)
 P Derek Holland (Texas Rangers)
 P Glen Perkins (Minnesota Twins)
UT Ben Zobrist (Tampa Bay Rays)
C JP Arencibia (Toronto Blue Jays)
 C/1B Joe Mauer (Minnesota Twins)
 C Jonathan Lucroy (Milwaukee Brewers)
1B Mark Teixeira (New York Yankees)
 2B Brandon Phillips (Cincinnati Reds)
 SS Jimmy Rollins (Philadelphia Phillies)
3B David Wright (New York Mets)
 UT Willie Bloomquist (Arizona Diamondbacks)
 OF Giancarlo Stanton (Miami Marlins)
 OF Ryan Braun (Milwaukee Brewers)
OF Shane Victorino (Boston Red Sox)
 OF Adam Jones (Baltimore Orioles)
P Heath Bell (Arizona Diamondbacks)
P Mitchell Boggs (St. Louis Cardinals)
P Steve Cishek (Miami Marlins)
P Kris Medlen (Atlanta Braves)

Not a lot to get excited about if this is the best team that the United States of America can produce.  It will be fun to watch new Red Sox OF Shane Victorino play, but if he gets hurt and misses any time at all for the Sox, I will be learning French and moving to Canada.

I guess my problem with the World Baseball Classic is that America invented baseball and now we could care less about the game.  In the 1950’s and 60’s, the elite of the elite would travel to Japan to spread the history and knowledge of the game. Now we can’t even get 5 good pitchers to play in Marlins Park in Miami. Looks like we will have to root, root, root for the Venezuela team with Felix Hernandez and Anibal Sanchez and set our clocks early.

What are your thoughts on the World Baseball Classic?
